Dear Doug,

Director Ang Lee’s recent Golden Globe-winning Brokeback Mountain may be a lyrical, heartrending love story - but the film’s marketing and publicity team certainly didn’t embrace the theme; Fade In magazine explores how, in an effort to market the movie to a mainstream audience, Focus Features effectively shut out the gay press, leaving many to question the sincerity of the film’s message.

Why were gay and lesbian journalists left out of the movie’s publicity campaign?

What do gay journalists have to say about the exclusion?

Did this direction come from the studio, or the actors’ insecurities, as some media pundits have suggested?

How has Focus Features reacted to the article, in light of the current Oscar race?
