Further to the recent discussion about US market access as a
foreign policy instrument, this from an article by Floyd Norris in today’s NYT
on the soaring volume of Chinese exports:

“And while the United States is still the worlds No. 1
exporter, that is nothing compared with its dominance of the other end of the trade
equation. In the first half of this year, it imported more than China and
Germany put together, and three times as much as Japan.”

No indication of the source of the data

Export data usually comes from the WTO or the IMF.

Do you or anyone else on the list know of any studies which collate
the trade stats so as to confirm or refute the statement above?
Couldn’t find anything using a whole combination of keywords on
Google, although, as you know, there is a ton of scattered data.

You have to pay through the nose for the IMF’s Direction of Trade
Statistics (though those with univ library access can get it), but
there should be plenty here: http://www.wto.org/english/res_e/statis_e/statis_e.htm.

The statement that the U.S. remains the world’s top exporter was an error, which has since been corrected. Germany is larger, as the charts indicated.

All the data on national exports and imports came from reports by the nations in question, but I downloaded them from Haver Analytics, which is not a free site.
