Angleton was a crazy CIA counterespionage specialist (who loved to
quote Eliot’s line about the wilderness of mirrors). He trusted no
one, and thought everyone was a double or a triple agent. He was
purged from the CIA during the Carter years, and thought Gorbachev
was a big fraud who was trying to trick the US into surrender.
