EXPENSIVE NOTES That four-second musical introduction that sounds at =
the start of Windows Vista, the new operating system from Microsoft =
that went on sale Tuesday, took 20 people and 18 months to create, =
Linda Tischler reports in Fast Company.
The team started with 500 unique sounds submitted by composers, sound =
designers, engineers and developers. A decision that =93a peaceful =
theme was what the hypercaffeinated, overstimulated PC users of the =
world needed now=94 helped winnow the list down to a manageable number, =
and focus groups then narrowed the list to three. Jim Allchin, co- =
president of Microsoft=92s Windows Group, made the final call.
