Well yeah, that supports my point more than it does the U.S.-will-
never-leave gang. What’s really damaging to the empire is the
constant bleeding - the sight of the U.S. military getting slowly
hammered, and the increasing domestic discontent the war is causing.
Carrol et al seem to think that withdrawal is impossible to
contemplate, but it happened in Vietnam, and it’s almost certain to
happen in Iraq. And the empire survived, though it lacked a spring in
its step for years afterward.
