needed: Sicko volunteers in the NYC area

From: Joanne Landy jlandy@igc.org Date: June 27, 2007 1:20:34 PM EDT To: jlandy@igc.org Subject: RSVP: SICKO VOLUNTEERS

Hi all! (please reply with any questions, and with the theater/time
you have chosen. If you like, you can use the little form at the end
of this message. Otherwise just send a fresh email with the info),

PLEASE JOIN US IN HELPING BUILD A national movement to take advantage
of movie goer’s frustration after seeing Sicko and channel their
energies towards helping improve healthcare and promoting a single
payer platform. We now have a reasonably full list of movie theaters
showing the film — more than 50 volunteers, including a fleet of
medical students, so we should be able to cover most of the theaters
on opening night, Friday, June 29. We can use more volunteers, so
please help if you can! (and apologies in advance if you get more
than one copy of this email.)

1) FLYERS - we can send you a PDF for you to print yourself, or we
can arrange for you to pick up the flyers themselves. It will
obvioulsy be easier and cheaper if you can print them at work/school
on colored paper.

2) GATHER FRIENDS to help out! Try to have a banner or poster whether
it is your local AMSA, PNHP, SNMA, etc banner it makes it look more
official! If you are feeling enterprising, you could go to your local
Kinko’s and have both sides of the flyer blown up and put on
posterboard. But it’s no tragedy if you don’t have a banner or poster
– YOU are the most important part of this enterprise.

3) On June 29th, we will flyer as shows are ending…a rule of thumb
is to show up at the movie theater two hours after the start time.
The film lasts exactly two hours, with10-25 minutes for the previews
etc. This will give you time to ascertain the exit Sicko viewers will
be using, so you can leaflet them as they leave. Please check out the
theaters and show times below, and let me know which one(s) you want
to cover, whether you have a friend going with you, and how you plan
to obtain flyers (print them yourself, get them from us, etc.) If you
have already responded to Sayone Thihalolipavan, no need to do so
again. PLEASE WEAR YOUR WHITE COAT IF YOU HAVE ONE.

4) Sicko Opening Night Party: Some young people from We Be Illin’ ,
AMSA, SNMA and other groups are arranging post-screening parties near
some of the theaters. Please let me know if you want the details as
they emerge.

“Private Health Insurance Must Go” Coalition welcomes NYC opening of
SiCKO at Lincoln Square Theater in Manhattan Press Conference Friday, June 22, 12:30pm

New York, N.Y. - June 21, 2007 - Physicians, healthcare advocates,
nurses, and patients held a press conference on Friday, June 22 at
12:30 pm to welcome the early opening of Michael Moore’s new film
SiCKO at the Lincoln Square Theater, 68th Street and Broadway, in
Manhattan.

The group represents a new “Private Health Insurance Must Go”
Coalition, which is sponsored by Physicians for a National Health
Program (PHNP) NY Metro Chapter, NYC Chapter of Healthcare-NOW!, and
the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA). It is co-sponsored by
several other organizations. Healthcare professionals wore white
coats and scrubs.

“We are very excited by the tremendous interest SiCKO has sparked
even before it opened,” said Oliver Fein, MD, Chair of PNHP-NY Metro:
“Michael Moore’s film has struck a chord among Americans across the
political spectrum who are fed up with the unfair, wasteful and
unreliable U.S. healthcare system. We believe the message of the film
– that the health care system in the U.S. is broken and needs to be
fixed — will help build widespread support for single-payer national
health insurance.”

Ajamu Sankofa, Chair of the NYC Chapter of Healthcare-NOW noted,
“Health care is a fundamental human right. SiCKO, Michael Moore’s
brilliant film makes the salient and truthful point that health care
for profit must end now because it is immoral and an absolute denial
of health care. For the first time, this powerful message is
accessible to millions of Americans as it cuts through the lies of
the private insurance industry.”

“Americans are beginning to understand that we are paying huge sums
for a system that is ineffective and wasteful,” said Judy Sheridan- Gonzalez, RN, an emergency room nurse at Montefiore Medical Center in
the Bronx and a member of the NYSNA Board of Directors. “Single-payer
is the only way to build a fair, cost-efficient healthcare financing
system. Any plan that continues to rely on private insurance
companies for most of the nation’s healthcare coverage is not going
to succeed.”

Two major medical student organizations, the Student National Medical
Association and the American Medical Students organization, are co- founders of the “Private Health Insurance Must Go” Coalition. They
will join the Aids Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), We Be Illin’,
an organization of young health care advocates, Housing Works,
Children Rise Foundation, the Brecht Forum, Long Island Coalition for
a National Health Plan and other groups in passing out flyers to
people attending SiCKO throughout the New York metropolitan area.

PNHP, NYSNA and Healthcare Now! all support H.R.676, a bill now
before Congress that would establish a single-payer health insurance
plan for all Americans. The three groups also support New York Health
Plan (A.7354 /S.3107), legislation that would create a statewide
single-payer insurance system.
